A little bit about the music classroom:

In music class students will sing, move, listen, imitate, explore, experience, analyze, classify, create, share, perform, notate, read, improvise, cooperate, and most importantly HAVE FUN!!!! We strive to create innovative, engaging lesson plans which include singing, playing instruments, and moving in each of our lessons. Music is important here at Dolvin Elementary. Studies show that students who receive music perform better on tests involving reading, math, problem solving, and logical thinking.

1st Grade: Please review the vocabulary word - dynamics (volume) with students. Then review forte (loud) and piano (soft). Sing along with Forte Piano in video below.

Have students stand in place and perform movement with piece of music, the Surprise Symphony and identify the dynamics (volume) as mostly piano with a few louder sounds. Identify where they hear the louder sounds and how they move their bodies. Use the video below:

Let students know that Hadyn wrote this music with sudden surprises on purpose! Watch the background of why Haydn wrote his surprise symphony.

Have students watch the following video and try to identify what is different in the music?

Students will probably notice the tempo changes. Have them practice these movements with movement expert, Darva Campbell

Try to perform again without the tutorial video while the orchestra plays.

Elements of Dance
Following this activity, remind students about the elements of dance. You may refer to the list on the board.

Check with students to see if they have completed this activity: If yes, then skip: Students should have reviewed awareness of body and shake their bodies with the tambourine. Today they will review awareness of space and time. Students will need to blow up an imaginary bubble and "climb inside". They will take their bubble through an aquarium. Their goal is NOT to pop their bubble while "floating" through the "water" around the room. Their movements should match the music. Challenge them to shrink their bubble when the music sounds like it is floating downward and then float away. You may choose to complete this activity a second time. Use the video below for the music.

Check with students to see if they have completed this activity: If yes, then skip: Not only do we need to focus on awareness of traveling safely through space, but we should also think about how we can move more expressively and why this could be important. Watch the story of Silly Sally. She certainly moved in a way that was very different from everyone!

Check with students to see if they have completed this activity: If yes, then skip: How did Sally move? How did her new friends move? We are going to talk about ways we can move and why it is important. Watch this video below with Mrs. Polaski. She will give us exercises we can complete in the music classroom! (watch for directions of two activities students will complete following the video)

Check with students to see if they have completed this activity: If yes, then skip:
Activities:
Have students get into 4 (or 5) lines. I have them line up on the side of the room by the green bench / piano / sink in rows by the color bench they sit on. So, example: blue team stand in a line (show them where to line up and have them line up behind you), then red team, yellow team, green team, and for larger classes, black team.

Activity 1: Move across the floor - any way but walk normal. Have the first person in each line go from one end of the room to the other and stop. They will stay on the side of the room closest to the door. The next person in the group would go next. And continue until all students have traveled across the floor.

Activity 2: Move across the floor - any way but walk normal like above, but this time, say "CHANGE" at least two times for each group as they travel across the floor as demonstrated in the video.

IF YOU HAVE TIME / OR THE CLASSES ARE AHEAD AND HAVE SEEN / DONE THE ABOVE ACTIVITIES - YOU MAY MOVE ON

Check with students to see if they have completed this activity: If yes, then skip:
Awareness of Levels
Watch the video below and complete the two activities demonstrated in the video:

Check with students to see if they have completed this activity: If yes, then skip:
Activities:
Have students find "polka dot space". They know what that is! You will count down backwards from 5 to 0 slowly to let them spread out into their own personal space. Then call levels and have students pose. You will see when you say "high", all students do the same pose. Encourage them to peek around the room to see they are all matching. Call out high pose two more times and see if they can be creative and come up with different poses. Then call medium three times, followed by low three times. Then mix it up!

Activity 2: Have students start low and then have them move through the levels (very slowly) until you say FREEZE. Continue until you feel students have an understanding of levels.

Awareness of Weight:
Watch the video below and complete the two following activities:

Activity 1: Students will pair up into two teams. They will take turns trying to lift each other's leg to act like it is super heavy. Then switch. Brainstorm other ways to work together to make something look heavy like in the video above.

Activity 2: How can you work together with your partner and make your movements work together and look light? Explore for a few minutes.

(OR SKIP RIGHT TO THE VIDEOS BELOW)

Check with students to see if they have completed this activity: If yes, then skip:
